Ben Campbell (Jim Sturgess) may be shy, but his wallflower reputation betrays his inner brilliance. As smart as Ben may be, however, if he can’t pay his tuition he’ll be kicked out of M.I.T. Fortunately, the answer to all of Ben’s problems is right there in the cards. Recruited to join a team of extremely gifted students who have used their mastery of numbers to beat the odds at blackjack, Ben procures a fake identity in order to join the casino scammers and their brilliant leader — eccentric math professor and stats genius Micky Rosa (Kevin Spacey) — in some highly profitable weekend excursions to Las Vegas. While wandering the English moors on vacation, college yanks David (David Naughton) and Jack (Griffin Dunne) happen upon a quaint pub with a mysterious patronage who warn them not to leave the road when walking after dark. Irreverent of such advice as characters in horror films always are, the two decide to find a short cut….David wakes up in the hospital with a nasty bite wound to his shoulder; the freshly deceased, and rapidly decomposing, Jack arrives soon after to deliver the grim news that, unless he commits suicide, David will become a werewolf when the moon is full. David dismisses the encounter as a hallucination, but all indicators point to lycanthrope; evenings of barking and bloodletting follow closely behind. While the story is thin and much of the tongue-in-cheek humor is overdone, there are plenty of genuine jolts thanks to makeup guru Rick Baker’s eye-popping special effects. The werewolf, resembling a cross between a bear and a wolverine, appears frighteningly real, and, given the fantastic premise, the gore is most convincing (although surprisingly and refreshingly scant). The hospital dream sequences are creative, and the scenes in which the werewolf runs rampant through downtown London are particularly good. In all, An American Werewolf in London is an original, atmospheric film that manages both to scare and amuse. While dismissed by most American critics upon its release, the film managed to secure a place in the annals of American cinema when Baker won an Academy Award for his amazing effects and creature designs. ~ Jeremy Beday, Rovi

Vin Diesel opted to not appear in the sequel to the film the shot him to stardom in the first place, The Fast and the Furious. With the character of Dominic Toretto out of the picture, 2 Fast 2 Furious concentrates exclusively on the latest exploits of undercover agent Brian O’Connor, played by Paul Walker. In addition, with director Rob Cohen passing, producers have added a dash of credibility to the sequel by hiring John Singleton to helm. What does completely remain from the first film is the presence of fast-living underground street-racing gangs. Moving from Los Angeles to Miami, O’Connor is looking to redeem himself after the events of the first movie, so he again goes undercover to infiltrate another group of thuggish car enthusiasts. This time around he’s enlisted the help of ex-con Roman Pierce (Tyrese) and fellow agent Monica Celemente (Eva Mendes) to bring down Carter Verone (Cole Hauser), an importer/exporter who heads up a massive drug trafficking operation. Movie description

A brilliant African-American scientist transforms a black militant into a super human hero with incredible strength and fantastic mental abilities after moving into an affluent white neighborhood and becoming the victim of racism. All Dr. Kenneth Kincade wanted was to live in a nice neighborhood where his children would be safe and his family could be happy. Unfortunately his bigoted neighbors had other plans. When Dr. Kincade’s family is greeted with threats and vandalism, Black Front or Unity leader John Abar (Toblar Mayo) steps in to protect them from the swelling tide of intolerance. Thanks to Abar, Dr. Kincade is able to resume his research into a serum designed to make ordinary men invincible. Later, when racial tensions turn deadly, Dr. Kincade uses the serum on Abar and creates a black superman whose might and mental abilities strike fear into the hearts of intolerant racists everywhere. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi
